A white male accused of beating a Navajo man will go to trial in the border town of Farmington, New Mexico, on January 9.

John Winer, 18, is one of three males charged with several crimes. The trio allegedly beat William Blackie, 46, after they asked him to buy beer for them.

The prosecutor filed a hate crime motion in the case. If Winer is found guilty, he could face additional punishment.

The June 4 incident led the Navajo Nation to study racism in border towns.
