Three white males will face hate crimes charges for the beating of Navajo man in Farmington, New Mexico.

The District Attorney's office filed motions to prosecute under the Hate Crimes Act on Wednesday. Conviction under the law carries additional penalties.

William Blackie, 46, was beaten by three young men on June 4. The incident renewed concerns about racism in border towns.

Blackie said the men yelled racial slurs while beating him. John Winer, 18, Freddie Brooks, 20, and CL Carney, 20, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
