The Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold a second public meeting on the Oneida Nation's request to have 17,000 acres in upstate New York placed in trust.

The BIA has issued a draft environmental impact statement on the proposed acquisition. The report outlined the tribe economic contributions to the regional economy.

Local officials in Madison and Oneida counties, where the land is located, oppose the tribe's request. They are trying to limit the amount of land, if any, that can be acquired.

The public meeting takes place February 6 in Verona. The deadline for written comments on the draft report is February 22.
