The Oneida Nation of New York objected to an unannounced inspection of its gasoline station by Madison County.
The tribe says it would have agreed to an inspection of its SavOn gas station. But county inspectors say their policy is to do random checks.
The gas station is on fee land within the boundaries of the original Oneida Reservation. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled the tribe must go through the land-into-trust process before reclaiming sovereignty.
The county says the ruling means it has jurisdiction over the gas station and other tribal properties. The tribe has offered to enter into compacts or other agreements.
