War Mothers Memorial at Haskell suffers damage

A 39-year-old man faces charges after allegedly knocking over the War Mothers Memorial at Haskell Indian Nations University.

The man pushed the 6-foot, 250-pound sculpture to the ground, causing significant damage. “It was knocked off the pedestal. It hit the ground pretty hard,” Haskell spokesperson Lori Tapahonso told The Lawrence-Journal World.

Barry Coffin (Potawatomi/Creek) unveiled the sculpture in May 2005. It represents the mothers who send their children to war.

The sculpture was commissioned by the Haskell Veterans Club and Auxiliary, which raised about $50,000 for the work. A preliminary estimate put the damage at $16,000.
