Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas handed out degrees to a record 186 students during commencement exercises on Friday.

Of the graduates, 78 received bachelor�s degrees in American Indian studies, business administration, elementary education or environmental science. �Before I came to Haskell, a job counselor with the Forestry Service told me a degree from Haskell wouldn�t get me hired. I got hired anyway," Terra Houska, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, told The Lawrence Journal-World.

Ernie Stevens Jr., a Haskell graduate and chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association, delivered the keynote. �Haskell helped me learn to behave,� he said, the paper reported.

More than 2,000 people attended the ceremony. It was followed by a pow-wow over the weekend.
