Haskell in 'dire circumstances' over budget cuts

Haskell Indian Nations University is in "dire circumstances" due to a series of budget cuts, said budget director Michael Lewis.

The school lost 1.5 percent of its operational budget of $9.5 million due to a government-wide cut to pay for Hurricane Katrina and Iraq. Last week, officials were told they would lose another 1 percent. That 2.5 percent comes to about $238,000," Lewis told The Lawrence Journal-World.

Separately, the maintenance department was cut by $600,000 and is facing a $900,000 deficit due to the high cost of natural gas and pay raises.

Some Haskell workers may have to be furloughed as a result of the cuts.
