David Tsosie, one of the Navajo Code Talkers who fought in World War II, died on Saturday. He was 83.
Tsosie joined the Marines along with several other classmates from the United Methodist Mission School, a boarding school for Navajos. He was injured in the Battle of Saipan in June 1944.
Despite his service, there was no record of his involvement as a Code Talker. But after a military inquiry, he received his Congressional medal in 2002, a year after other Navajo soldiers received theirs. He was also awarded a Purple Heart.
