Abramoff Scandal
Another Republican questioned over ties to Abramoff

Rep. John Sweeney (R-New York) is facing late campaign questions about his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Sweeney went to the Northern Mariana Islands in January 2001 with Tony Rudy, an Abramoff associate and former Tom DeLay staffer who has pleaded guilty. The trip, according to The Albany Times-Union, was sponsored by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.

If that is true, Sweeney may have violated ethics rules because the Chamber of Commerce is a lobbying group. But he believes the trip was financed by the Northern Marianas government.

Sweeney is facing a tough campaign against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.
