Samuel A. Alito Jr. was sworn in as the 110th Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, shortly after the Senate voted 48 to 42 to confirm him.
The vote tally, divided largely along party lines, was the slimmest margin since Clarence Thomas's 1991 nomination. Four Democrats voted for Alito while one Republican voted against him.
Hours after being sworn in during a private ceremony at the Supreme Court, Alito attended President Bush's 5th State of the Union. During the speech, Bush thanked former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who stepped down this week.
Alito will now begin to hear cases as a justice. No new Indian law cases have been accepted by the court so far.
