The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10 to 8 along party lines to approve the nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. as U.S. Supreme Court justice.

The Senate will begin floor debate on Alito today. He is assured of confirmation due to Republican control of the Senate, although most Democrats are expected to vote against him.

If confirmed, Alito replaces Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is retiring. She often provided the swing vote on many cases, including Indian law cases.
