President Bush named Harriet Miers, the White House counsel, as the replacement for retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The announcement was made from the White House at 8am.
Miers is a member of Bush's inner circle. She is from Texas and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association. She has never been a judge and held elected office once.
"She will not legislate from the bench," Bush said at the White House.
If confirmed, Miers would be the third woman to serve on the court. Once O'Connor leaves, she would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman sitting on the court.
