President Bush announced Samuel A. Alito Jr., a judge on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, as his new U.S. Supreme Court nominee this morning.
Alito is sometimes referred to in legal circles as "Scalito" -- after Justice Antonin Scalia -- for his strict conservative views. Alito was appointed to the bench in 1990 by George H.W. Bush and served in the Justice Department during the Reagan administration.
Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, withdrew her nomination last Thursday amid doubts over her conservative credentials.
