The White House and Republican strategists are preparing for the possible resignation of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, The Washington Post reports.
The White House is already moving to nominate someone to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who resigned last week. Rehnquist, 80, hasn't announced his plans but some believe he will leave the Supreme Court shortly.
President Bush won't make an announcement about O'Connor's replacement until next week at the earliest. He has criticized conservatives for attacking Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, a potential nominee. He has said he will take into account someone's character before he makes a choice.
