The U.S. Supreme Court will hold a ceremonial swearing-in today for new Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.
Alito was given his oath of office immediately after being confirmed by the Senate on January 31. He has already taken part in some decisions and will participate in his first conference, where the justices decide which cases to accept and reject, on Friday.
Today's ceremony, known as an investiture, is only open to members of the press but Alito and Chief Justice John G. Roberts will make a brief appearance outside the court at approximately 2:15pm.
