The Oneida Nation of New York is offering to pay more than $1 million in back taxes to the city of Oneida.

The tribe says it will comply with all local codes if the city agrees to waive the interest and fees on the back taxes and agrees to stop foreclosure proceedings on land the tribe owns in the city.

The agreement would last five years, or until the land is taken into trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribe has filed applications to have all 17,000 acres it owns in two counties placed in trust.

The U.S. Supreme Court in March ruled that the tribe can't "unilaterally" reassert its sovereignty on ancestral lands without going through the land-into-trust process.
