A member of the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians was ordered to pay $17,300 to a Utah bank as part of his punishment in a tribal theft case.
Sammy Blackbear took the money from Zions Bank after claiming victory in a disputed tribal election. The Bureau of Indian Affairs never recognized him as a legitimate leader.
Three other people who allegedly helped Blackbear access the tribe's bank accounts face a trial in September. Blackbear could also be sentenced to jail time.
The tribe's chairman, Leon Bear, was sentenced last month to three years probation, back taxes and fines, and $31,542 in restitution for pleading guilty to one count of tax fraud.
