Who represents New York tribes that are negotiating land claim deals with the Gov. George Pataki?
The question is surfacing as traditional leaders raise objections to the proposed settlements. The Haudenosaunee Council of Chiefs, the Oneida Nation chiefs and the Cayuga Nation chiefs have all said they won't support deals that involve out-of-state tribes and gaming rights.
The Cayuga Nation of New York, the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans from Wisconsin settled their claims in New York with Pataki but the deals are being negotiated again in light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Oneida Nation case.
