Leaders of Mohawk tribes in New York and Canada are due to announce a land claim settlement with Gov. George Pataki (R) today.
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne in Canada are involved in talks. They would receive $100 million, 215 acres, low-cost power and the right to buy more land.
Pataki had previously proposed to settle the claim but a new tribal administration didn't approve of linking the deal to state taxation.
