The Cayuga Nation of New York and Gov. George Pataki (R) announced a settlement to the tribe's land claim that will allow a casino in the Catskills.
The deal means both tribal plaintiffs in the 64,000-acre land claim have settled. Last week, the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma agreed to drop its share of the claim for a Catskills casino.
The Cayuga Nation will do the same but will also get to exercise sovereignty on up to 10,000 acres in western New York. The tribe will negotiate a tax compact with the state, compensate two counties for land taken into trust and negotiate service agreements with local governments.
The deal requires the state to pay the Cayuga Nation, and only the Cayuga Nation, up to $150 million for any land claim judgment. The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe has given up its share of an award.
The tribes were awarded $247.9 million by a federal judge for the stolen land. The case is before the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.
