Oneida Nation criticizes Seneca-Cayuga deal

The Oneida Nation of New York says a land claim settlement with an out-of-state tribe sets a bad precedent.

"Gov. Pataki just hung a 'For sale sign' on New York state for any out-of-state Indian nation to establish a casino strictly to make money to send back to their home reservation. He is giving in-state opportunities and money to out-of-state interests," a tribal spokesperson told The Syracuse Post-Standard.

The Oneida Nation says the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma should not be granted authority in New York. As part of the deal, the Seneca-Cayugas will be able to open a casino in the Catskills but won't have land anywhere else in the state.

The Oneida Nation is part of a land claim with the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. The New York Oneida don't want their relatives asserting authority in New York.
