Members of the Cayuga Nation of New York have removed their federally-recognized representative.
Clint Halftown has been the public face of the tribe throughout land claim negotiations with the state. He appeared at a press conference with Gov. George Pataki (R) and signed documents to settle the suit.
But Halftown, a member of the Heron Clan, later wrote a letter to withdraw the tribe from the deal. Other tribal leaders of the Turtle Clan say he abused his power in a gaming deal.
The Turtle Clan says the settlement is still on. The Heron Clan opposes it.
