"When I read recently that Clear Channel pulled the plug on Stern's show in six markets, I wasn't surprised. What surprised me is that there is an audience for his kind of show so late at night. Most people, except night workers, would be sleeping, I thought.

I remember Stern as my first radio "shock jock." When I first moved to Reston, Va., (I worked in the District of Columbia), the first thing I did in the morning was turn on the radio. It was background while I showered and dressed. I really didn't pay much attention to what was playing on the radio.

A little country music might have made me listen up, but his was a talk show with rock music interspersed. As I began to catch snatches of what he and his callers were saying, this naive North Dakotan was stunned. On his call-in show, they really talked trash. At first, I couldn't help but listen. It was so off the wall and raw, I was hypnotized."
