Gov. Haley Barbour (R) is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to stop the
Mississippi Band of Choctaw
Indians from building a new casino.
Barbour claims the new facility will harm groundwater in the area. He said the EPA's regional office found problems with the wastewater system.
"[T]he slot parlor as planned will not live up to federal environmental standards," Barbour said in the letter.
The tribe operates two casinos at its headquarters in Philadelphia.
The new facility is about 80 miles away but is still considered a part of the
reservation.
