"When I heard the forecaster say it might reach 51 degrees Friday, I did a little "yahoo!" jump, even with my bad knee.

Yes, this is me talking - the woman who loves the cold and the north wind - but then, I'd had a particularly trying week. I'd looked the north wind right in the face, and he shook my confidence down to my toes.

My adventures with driving blind in whiteouts began last week when I was in Bismarck on personal and Herald business. After an interview with the director of the state's Division of Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response, I started back to Grand Forks.

There were weather warnings that said "hold up for a day," but when you want to get home, you ignore warnings. After all, I said to myself, the sky was blue and almost cloudless. What can happen?

The north wind warnings were clear: The night before, it had snowed 2 to 3 inches, so those endless prairies were almost smooth and full of snow.

From experience, I knew this wasn't good."
