Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe lobbies Washington

Leaders of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts were in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with federal officials.

Chairman Glenn Marshall and Vice Chairman Shawn Hendricks met with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the National Indian Gaming Commission and the Indian Health Service. The tribe's federal recognition became final in May.

The tribe plans to submit a land-into-trust application in the next two months, a spokesperson said. The land in Middleboro would be used for gaming and other purposes. The tribe does not plan to seek land at its tribal headquarters in Mashpee.
