Trial into Shinnecock sovereignty wraps up

A federal judge heard closing arguments in the Shinnecock Nation's sovereignty dispute with the state of New York.

The state sued to block the tribe from using a 79-acre parcel for a potential casino. The state says it has jurisdiction over the site.

The tribe says it never lost sovereignty within its aboriginal territory. A lawyer said the town of Southampton shouldn't interfere with the tribe's plans for the land.

The tribe lacks federal recognition and is in the final stages of the Bureau of Indian Affairs process. In another lawsuit, a federal judge said the tribe should be treated as an Indian tribe.
