The Shinnecock Nation of New York has been busy lately with lawsuits over land, gaming and federal recognition.
Based on Long Island, the tribe has a state-recognized reservation but is waiting on the Bureau of Indian Affairs for recognition. A lawsuit seeks to force the BIA to make an answer.
Meanwhile, the tribe filed suit against the state over 3,700 acres of ancestral territory. But a judge dismissed the case, citing recent rulings from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.
A third suit appears to be more successful. In hopes of using the land for gaming, the tribe is asserting sovereignty over a 79-acre parcel it won in a 1922 court case. A judge said the tribe was Indian for purposes of federal law.
