Federal Recognition
Shinnecock Nation must wait for recognition

Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation of New York are prepared to wait for federal recognition even after a judge declared them to be a bonafide tribe.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs said it won't abide by the decision because it wasn't a party to the case. The Bush administration said the tribe has to go through the federal recognition process, which can take decades to complete.

Not every tribe has gone through the process. The BIA recognized an Alaska tribe through litigation and has done so for other tribes through administrative means.

The Shinneock Nation hopes to open a casino once it gains recognition. Local officials and politicians oppose the idea.
