The Shinnecock Nation of New York announced the creation of a program to treat substance abuse among tribal members.
Tribal representatives said they started Substance Abuse Mobilization Project to address rampant drug and alcohol addictions. A pastor who has been sober for 19 years estimated that 10 to 20 percent of the tribe has an abuse problem.
SAMP, named after a traditional Shinnecock dish, received a $5,000 seed grant from the state.
Rep. Timothy Bishop (D-New York) is seeking $60,000 in federal funds to help the tribe.
