Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. signed a bill into law to provide emergency funds to a detention center in Chinle, Arizona.
The Chinle Adult Detention Center was closed last month due to safety and health concerns.
It will receive $748,932 under a $10 million appropriations bill signed by Shirley.
As a result of the closure, the tribe only has 59 jail beds across its three-state reservation.
Navajo Nation Council Delegate Hope MacDonald-LoneTree told a House subcommittee that criminals are going free.
