Maxine Natchees, the chairwoman of the Ute Tribe's business committee. says the Bureau of Indian Affairs shouldn't have closed the detention facility on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah.
Natchees says the BIA failed to provide adequate funding for the 30-year-old jail. But the BIA now says it is not cost-effective to fix and upgrade the ailing facility.
As a result of the closure, tribal inmates will now be sent hundreds of miles away to BIA detention centers in Colorado and New Mexico.
