BIA working on study of detention centers
Despite a slew of reports documenting poor conditions at Indian Country detention centers, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has hired a consultant to study the issue. The final report is expected later this year. Meanwhile, offenders on the Navajo Nation are going free because the jails are overcrowded and unsuitable for inhabitation. "It's a lawless society," Hope MacDonald Lone Tree, a Navajo Nation Council delegate, tells The Arizona Republic. No new jails have been built on the Navajo Nation despite an Interior Department Inspector General report saying the existing facilities are among the worst. Get the Story:
