Mark Trahant: Agree to disagree about warming

"If you believe in literal truth -- and the absolute, personal power of a Creator -- then it doesn't really matter if we humans have fouled our own nest. We'll be taken care of later. That is a harsh way of dismissing the teaching of science, experimenting with stem cells or global warming. There simply cannot be resolution without destroying the very ideas held most sacred.

But what if we leave the philosophical debate for another day? What if we start the conversation acknowledging that there are, indeed, two ways of looking at truth and that we're going to have to agree to disagree about its nature? One solution might be to move faster on areas of agreement.

Last week's latest report from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change offers a few specific ideas that might be considered shared agreement. Some 2,000 scientists once again called for significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on more efficiency from vehicles and buildings. It also suggested we step up conversion from fossil fuels to renewable fuels.

Some things in the IPCC report are still fighting words: "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level."

But enough of the facts; we've already agreed to disagree."
