A trial into the Shinnecock Nation's sovereignty continued in a federal court in New York.

The tribe wants to use 79 acres for a possible resort. Local and state officials are trying to block the project, saying tribal sovereignty would prevent them from having any role in development.

The state recognizes the tribe and its reservation. But the tribe lacks federal recognition, meaning gaming on the site is far off.

The first judge who handled the case said the tribe is Indian for purposes of federal law. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, however, says the tribe has to wait for an answer on its federal recognition petition.
