Arlo Looking Cloud, an Oglala Sioux man convicted of murdering American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, was given a new lawyer to pursue a new trial.

Looking Cloud, 53, was convicted by a jury of Aquash's 1975 death. He appealed to the 8th Circuit but the court rejected him.

Soon after, he asked for his attorney to withdraw and sought a new one. He was assigned Mike Butler by the court. Looking Cloud now says he deserves a new trial on "inadequate counsel" and other grounds.

A second man, John Graham, a Native from Canada, awaits extradition to face charges for Aquash's death on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
