The Cowlitz Tribe of Washington is rebuilding its culture one song at a time.
A group of tribal members meets several times a month to learn songs. Some of them are brought by members of other tribes with Cowlitz ancestors. Many were lost over time as the tribe fought to gain the federal recognition that finally came through in 2000.
Some other songs have come from recordings, like tape from the 1920s that was provided by the Smithsonian Institution. But tribal members are also looking forward to creating their own songs.
