The Bureau of Indian Affairs is holding a public meeting next month on the Cowlitz Tribe's request to have 152 acres placed in trust.
The BIA will take comments on an environmental impact statement for the property, located in La Center. The tribe is paying for the study.
The tribe is seeking the land for an initial reservation. The tribe gained federal recognition during the Clinton administration.
In addition to housing and other development, the tribe plans on building a casino on the reservation, drawing objections from some residents.
