Gila River members oppose waste recycling facility

Members of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona are trying to kick a hazardous waste recycling facility off the reservation.

The plant is operated by Romic Environmental Technologies Corp. The company has been trying to get a full permit from the Environmental Protection Agency for 18 years.

Tribal members are worried about pollution. They cite Romic's violation of environmental laws at the facility and at other facilities.

Romic commissioned a health risk assessment that says the facility doesn't pose a risk to the community. The study comes as the company seeks to expand the plant.
