Business are slowly moving to the Salt River Reservation in Arizona in search of prime real estate and economic opportunities in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.
In recent years, a shopping center, a guitar factory and a national ice cream chain have moved to the reservation. Plans are underway for even more retail and commercial space in an area where land is scarce.
To deal with the influx, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community set up a corporation to help tribal members who own land negotiate deals with developers. In 2003, the tribe and tribal members signed a $400 million deal for an office and retail park.
