The Gila River Indian Community is in the middle of controversy over a proposed freeway in the Phoenix, Arizona, area.
The tribe has rejected proposals to place part of the freeway on the reservation. The stance has angered and frustrated people who live next to the reservation.
"We're neighbors, and neighbors are supposed to cooperate. We're their customers. When it comes to going to a casino or buying cigarettes, there are other places to go. They're convenient, but it would be convenient to put the expressway on their property," local resident Teri Pinkstaff told The Arizona Republic.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said the state will consider running the freeway through the reservation but only if the tribe wants it. Tribal Gov. William Rhodes, who took office in January, is pushing for consideration of the project.
