Oklahoma tribes address abuse of Native women

Oklahoma tribes are taking steps to curb the high rate of domestic violence against Native women.

The Muscogee Nation's domestic violence program set aside six apartments to serve as transitional living sites for victims. About 20 to 30 women go through the program a year.

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation's Soaring on Survival has a staff member who advocates for victims. The tribe has about 120 active clients.

Oklahoma ranks seventh among states with the most female domestic-violence victims. Of the 36 women who were victims of homicide in 2004, two were Native American.
