Navajo Nation authorities are seeing thousands of domestic violence cases in what they say has become a more violent trend.

In the last three months alone, the Navajo Nation Department of Law Enforcement reported 1,166 cases of domestic violence. During the second quarter of the year, there were 2,500 cases.

Officials attribute the rise to a growing population. But they also say offenders are getting more violent than in the past.

"We see the same cases, the same people, it's just that the injuries are more serious and the children are more involved. Today it's more graphic and a little more violent," senior prosecutor Leonard Livingston told The Gallup Independent.
