The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is using a $30,000 grant from the state to study the high homicide rate among Native Americans.
According to the tribe, the homicide rate for Native Americans in Robeson County is 27.1 cases per 100,000 people, compared to the national rate of 5.5 cases per 100,000 people. The tribe is based in Robeson County.
In 2004, 17 Native Americans were the victims of homicide, according to state statistics. This was 3.4 percent of all homicide cases in the state.
In addition to homicides, the tribe will study motor vehicle deaths, diabetes and other health-related issues.
