Tribes in Virginia continue to press their claims for federal recognition.
Rep. James P. Moran (D-Virginia) introduced a bill last July to recognize six tribes. But some Republicans are worried that recognition will lead to gaming in the state.
In hopes of addressing that issue, Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Virginia) introduced another bill to recognize just the Rappahannock Tribe. The bill bars gaming, which Chief Anne Richardson said the tribe doesn't want anyway.
The Virginia tribes greeted the Jamestown settlers four hundred years ago. Some had reservations established in the 1600s.
