A delegation of Virginia Indian leaders is heading off for England today to help plan the commemoration of the first English settlement in the United States
The leaders hope the trip will solidify their case for federal recognition. Eight tribes are the subject of a Senate bill that has languished in Congress in the past four years.
Stephen Adkins, the chief of the Chickahominy Tribe, and Ken Adams, the chief of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, will meet with Jamestown 2007 British Committee. Also on the trip are representatives of the U.S. Jamestown 2007 Commission.
