Pine Ridge man appears in court on beating charges

A man from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota appeared in court on Monday to face charges for an off-reservation incident.

Dakota Garnier, 19, is accused of assaulting Matthew Pepin with a bat. A witness said he saw Garnier swing the bat at Pepin outside a bar in Hot Springs.

Garnier fled to the reservation after being charged. He was arrested by county authorities after he left Pine Ridge to go to a doctor's appointment in Rapid City.

Garnier's 21-year-old brother, Dirk, also faces charges but has not been arrested.

The state of South Dakota sought an extradition compact with the Oglala Sioux Tribe to extradite the men. An agreement has not been reached.
