Deron Marquez, the prominent chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in southern California, is stepping down in 2007, after more than six years in office.

Marquez, 36, will be serving the remainder of his term. Then he will attend Claremont Graduate University, where he is a doctoral student.

Marquez plans to stay out of the public eye, except when incoming chairman Henry Duro, 56, calls on him to make lobbying trips to Washington and Sacramento. It's a job well-suited for Marquez, who gained prominence for promoting non-gaming economic development and for speaking out against "reservation shopping."

Duro is an experience leader as well. He has served as chairman on and off for several decades, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. He currently serves as vice chairman.
