Student union named after San Manuel Band leader

The new student union building at Cal State San Bernardino is named after a leader of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

Santos Manuel led the tribe when it was forced out of the San Bernardino Mountains by militia forces in 1866. The federal government then established a reservation for the tribe, named after Manuel.

The tribe donated $1 million for the cost of the $18 million Santos Manuel Student Union. The tribe donated an additional $2 million to expand the school's Cross Cultural Center, develop a diversity program and scholarship endowments and develop an internship program.
