A $43 million hotel in Washington, D.C., that was financed by four tribes is scheduled to open January 10.
The Residence Inn Capitol by Marriott is located near the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall. It is venture of Four Fires LLC, a partnership of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians of California, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians from California, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe of Wisconsin.
The tribes wanted to open the hotel in time for the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in September. But weather and the permit process delayed completion.
The effort is part of the tribes' efforts to diversify their economies. The Viejas Band recently became the 100 percent owner of a bank that provides services to tribes and individual Indians.
